EUR Transition: Teacher FAQ
What's changing with contractor pay from 1 November 2026, and what you need to do.
Most of Lanterna's business now runs in EUR. Most of our contractors work outside the UK, so we're moving to EUR as the standard currency for contractor pay. This makes our payment process simpler and more consistent across our international team.
From 1 November 2026, pay for all independent contractors (tutors and teachers) will be calculated and invoiced in EUR instead of GBP. UK-employed (PAYE) staff are not affected and stay in GBP.
Can I still be paid in my own currency? Will the amount I receive in my local currency change each month?Yes, you can still be paid in your own currency. Your invoices will always show EUR, but you choose the currency you're paid in (via Bank details in Hive). Please ensure that your desired payout currency and other bank details are up to date.
If your payout currency isn't EUR, our payment provider converts the EUR amount at its exchange rate on the day the payment is processed. Your hourly rate in EUR stays fixed, but the amount that arrives in your local currency can vary slightly from month to month as exchange rates move. Any conversion or transfer fee charged by our payment provider is deducted from the amount you receive, and you also cover any fees charged by your own bank or payment provider.
What is my new EUR rate, am I being paid less? No. Nobody's hourly rate goes down. We converted the current GBP rates using a recent average exchange rate and then rounded up to the next whole euro. This means the new rates are slightly higher than a direct conversion.

Rates are reviewed once a year, with any changes applying from 1 August. Lanterna may also change rates or your rate tier at other times. Any change will be shown on your Finance page, and we'll give you at least one month's notice. You can see your rates and rate tier on your Finance page in Hive.
I'm a substitute teacher on a fixed-term contract. Does the rate change apply mid-contract?Yes. The change applies to all contractors, including those partway through an assignment. From 1 November, your existing monthly fee is converted to EUR and rounded up, so you won't receive less than you do now.
What happens to academic hours that are logged or corrected after 1 November? What matters is when the work is logged. You have until 23:59 on 1 November (24 hours after October ends) to log your October academic hours. Everything logged by then is paid in GBP at your current rate.
- October work logged by 1 November is paid in GBP in November, as usual.
- Anything logged after the cut-off is paid in EUR, including late or corrected October items. Your first EUR payment will arrive around 20 December, before the winter holidays.
- To be paid in GBP for all your October work, please make sure everything is logged before the cut-off.
Do I need to sign the contract addendum? What happens if I don't?
Yes. All teachers and tutors must sign the contract addendum, because your current contract states your rates in GBP. You'll receive it by email and it must be signed by 28 October 2026.
Note that the change to EUR applies to all contractors from 1 November 2026 under clauses 2.1 and 9.2 of your existing contract. If you continue to provide services after that date, you accept these changes.
Signing the addendum is a requirement for any new work with Lanterna. If you haven't signed it, you won't be offered or placed in new tutoring, substitute or teaching positions until it's signed.
If you can't find the addendum or have trouble signing it, contact Lanterna at schools@lanterna.com before the deadline.
