How do I prepare for my first lesson?

Getting the most from your first session

A little preparation makes your first lesson far more productive. Here's how to get ready.

Have these to hand

  • Your goals — what you'd most like help with (a grade boost, confidence, a specific topic or an assignment).
  • Any recent work or grades that show where you're at.
  • Your subject and level — for example SL or HL — and which syllabus you're following.
  • Any upcoming deadlines, such as an IA, an Extended Essay milestone, or a mock exam.

Set up your space

Find a quiet spot with a stable internet connection, and check your camera and microphone work. Open the video-call link your tutor sends a few minutes early so you're settled and ready to start on time — see How do I join my lesson?

What the first session usually covers

Your tutor will introduce themselves, get to know you, and understand where you are right now. Together you'll agree a clear plan for the sessions ahead — so this first lesson is as much about direction as it is about content.
