National Insurance Number (NIN)

What it is and how to get one

If you are on a UK PAYE contract with us, you need a National Insurance number (NIN). As part of your PAYE agreement, Lanterna makes contributions on your behalf each month, including tax and National Insurance. Your NIN ensures these contributions are recorded against your name correctly.

You can find out more about National Insurance numbers on the UK government website.

Finding your NIN

If you are not sure what your NIN is, you can usually find it on:

  • a payslip
  • a P60
  • letters about your tax, pension, or benefits
  • the National Insurance section of your personal tax account

Applying for a NIN

You do not need to be a UK citizen to get a NIN, you only need to have the right to work in the UK. If you do not yet have a NIN, you can apply for one on the UK government website.

Lost your NIN?

If you have lost your NIN, visit the UK government website for guidance on how to retrieve it.
