Safeguarding at Lanterna Education

Our commitment to safe tutoring and what it means for you

At Lanterna Education we are committed to providing a safe environment for all students and tutors. Safeguarding is taken seriously by everyone at Lanterna, and it is essential that you read and understand your responsibilities before your first session.

The Lanterna Safeguarding Policy

Before you begin tutoring, you must read the full Lanterna Online Tutoring Safeguarding Policy. This document outlines the standards and procedures that all tutors, students, and families are expected to follow, and ensures that everyone acts in compliance with EU and UK law.

Safeguarding training

As part of your onboarding, you are required to complete two quizzes before you can complete your tutor profile on the Portal:

  1. New tutor quiz -- covers the basics of how we work at Lanterna
  2. Safeguarding quiz -- tests your understanding of our safeguarding procedures

Both quizzes are completed through our training platform at lanterna.thinkific.com. You will be directed to this as part of setting up your Portal profile.

Important: when registering on the training platform for the first time, you must use the same email address as your Portal account. Using a different email address may cause issues with your onboarding.

Your responsibilities as a tutor

As a Lanterna tutor, you are expected to:

  • Treat all students with respect and fairness, without discrimination
  • Create a safe and supportive environment in every session
  • Keep your language and conduct professional and appropriate at all times
  • Not communicate with students via social media, including Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, or Facebook
  • Report any safeguarding concerns to Lanterna promptly

The four R's

If a student makes a disclosure or you have a concern, the four R's provide a simple framework to guide your response:

Recognise Be aware of the signs that a student may be experiencing abuse or harm, including changes in behaviour, body language, and mood.

Respond Listen carefully, give the student time, and show that you care. It is your responsibility to share concerns with the right person.

Report Always share concerns in line with our safeguarding procedures. Even if a student asks you not to tell anyone, you must still report it. Contact us at safe@lanterna.com to report an incident.

Record Keep accurate and detailed notes of any concerns, including what the student said or did, their exact words where possible, and the actions taken. Record how you sought the student's consent to share information and their response.

Reporting a concern

If you have a safeguarding concern or need to report an incident, please contact us immediately at safe@lanterna.com.

If you end a session due to a safeguarding concern, you will not be penalised by Lanterna for doing so.

For the full procedures covering a range of specific situations, please refer to the Lanterna Online Tutoring Safeguarding Policy.
