Signing your Lanterna Education Agreement

What you need to sign before you can start tutoring

Once you have successfully interviewed with us, we will invite you to become a tutor. Before you can start, you will need to sign an agreement with Lanterna Education Ltd.

What you need to sign depends on whether you are based in the UK or outside of it. We will confirm this with you after your interview so we can send you the right documents. Generally, if you are physically present in the UK for 183 days or more in a tax year, you will be considered UK-resident for that year.

In both cases, you will also receive a Data Processing Agreement alongside your employment contract. Please make sure to read it carefully, fill in the correct details, and sign it before returning it to us.

Once we have received all of your signed documents, we will invite you to register on the Portal and you can begin applying for students.

If you are outside the UK

If you are based outside the UK, we will send you a contractor agreement to sign. Please read it carefully, fill in all the required details accurately, and sign and return it to us.

Please note that you should not enter a UK address on this document.

As an international contractor, you are responsible for handling your own tax obligations in your country of residence. We recommend seeking local tax advice if you are unsure of your obligations.

If you are in the UK

Tutors based in the UK must sign a PAYE agreement and complete an Employee Starter Checklist. You must also have the right to work in the UK before signing.

You can prove your right to work using the UK government tool. If you are unsure whether you have the right to work in the UK, please contact us at tutoring@lanterna.com before proceeding. Please note that all UK-based tutors must have the right to work in the UK. There is no alternative route for UK-based tutors who do not have it.

1. PAYE agreement

A PAYE agreement means Lanterna handles deductions such as tax, National Insurance, and student loan contributions on your behalf, which are taken from your earnings before you are paid each month.

We'll send you your contract by email via Scrive. When signing, please make sure to:

  1. Read the agreement carefully
  2. Enter your full legal name, including any middle names
  3. Enter a UK address
  4. Note your employment start date -- you will need this when completing your Employee Starter Checklist
  5. Provide your National Insurance Number (NIN)
    • If you do not yet have a NIN, you can still sign your agreement. Instead of a NIN, enter another form of official ID and note the document name immediately after it, for example: XX127VD22F - French Passport. Do not leave this field blank, as doing so will void your agreement
    • If you use an alternative ID, please send a scan of that document to tutoring@lanterna.com, cc'ing zane@lanterna.com
    • You should apply for a NIN as soon as possible. See our National Insurance Number article for more information
  6. Sign the agreement via Scrive

2. Employee Starter Checklist

An Employee Starter Checklist gives us the information we need to make the correct contributions on your behalf. To complete it:

  1. Complete the Starter Checklist form on the HMRC website. Read it carefully and answer accurately.
  2. Enter your employment start date. This must match the start date on your PAYE agreement exactly, please make sure both documents show the same date.
  3. On the final page, click Preview to generate a PDF
  4. Download the PDF, then sign and date the final page. A digital signature is acceptable, but it cannot be typed.
  5. Email your signed Starter Checklist to tutoring@lanterna.com, cc'ing zane@lanterna.com

If you have any questions, please contact us at tutoring@lanterna.com.
