School Support | Changes, withdrawals, missed lessons and notice periods
If you need to withdraw or cannot teach, tell Lanterna immediately. Missed lessons must usually be rescheduled at no extra cost, and notice expectations depend on placement length.
Short answer
If you are unable to deliver an assignment or specific lesson, tell Lanterna immediately. Do not leave the school or Lanterna to discover it late.
Contractual / operational position
The substitute teacher addendum states that:
- if you cannot carry out the substitute teacher services (for example due to illness or injury), you must notify Lanterna immediately
- missed lessons are your responsibility to reschedule, at no additional cost to Lanterna or the school
- Lanterna only pays for substitute teaching services actually carried out
Notice periods for ending a placement
The addendum also states that a teacher may terminate a placement with:
- 2 days’ notice if the placement is shorter than one month
- 2 weeks’ notice if the placement is longer than one month
What to do if you need to withdraw
Tell Lanterna:
- what the issue is
- whether it affects one lesson or the whole assignment
- whether it is temporary or permanent
- whether you can help with handover or rescheduling
Why early notice matters
Withdrawals and late changes are part of real work, but repeated avoidable disruption affects:
- school confidence
- student continuity
- future allocation decisions
Best practice
If in doubt, raise the risk early rather than waiting until the lesson is at risk of being missed.
