School Support - Payment - Non teaching hours

Non-teaching hours must be logged by the teacher in Hive, in the month they happen. Do not do extra work beyond the allowance without Lanterna approval.

Short answer

For School Support assignments, non-teaching hours are not logged automatically. You need to log them yourself in Hive, and they must be logged in the month they happened.

What counts as non-teaching hours

Non-teaching hours are for work that sits outside the live lesson itself. Depending on the assignment, that may include:

  • additional admin
  • extra marking beyond the normal expectation
  • agreed internal assessment support
  • certain school-facing tasks that are specifically approved

What is already assumed

Lanterna’s operating assumption is that each live teaching hour already includes a baseline amount of:

  • lesson preparation
  • basic formative / summative follow-up
  • normal email coordination connected to delivery

That means not every task should be logged separately.

How the allowance works

Non-teaching hour allowances are tied to the job and may scale with factors such as class size and scope. You should be able to see the available credits / allowance in Hive.

How to log them

Use Hive:

  • My jobs → Non-teaching tasks, or
  • Calendar → Add event

Add clear notes. The more clearly you describe the work, the easier it is to defend the hours if they are queried.

Critical rule: log them in the same month

This is the single most important rule.

If the work happened in January, it must generally be logged in January. It will usually not roll over to a later month.

What if the allowance is too low?

If the school is asking for work that goes beyond the allocated allowance:

  • do not do the extra work first
  • email schools@lanterna.com (or your dedicated CSM for this school)
  • explain what is being requested
  • estimate the extra time needed

Lanterna can then confirm whether:

  • the work is already included
  • extra hours can be approved
  • or the school needs to add credits / amend scope

Common mistake to avoid

Teachers sometimes ask Lanterna to log non-teaching hours for them. The default expectation is that you log them yourself unless Lanterna has explicitly told you otherwise.
